From Video Reviews to Communication Between Officials, Powered by Vogo
Did the ball cross the goal line? Did a foul warrant a red card? With the Vogo Elite Bundle, referees could review incidents that required a closer look. Video assistants selected the most relevant angles from footage captured by 16 cameras during the preliminary round and up to 19 in the final phase. Audio systems also kept officials connected throughout each match.
Referees used video replay 83 times across 45 matches. This edition also introduced public announcements following reviews, giving spectators in the arena and viewers at home a clearer understanding of the referees’ decisions.
Behind the Scenes of Refereeing with Vogo and the EHF
Preparations began well before the opening matches, with operator training at Vogo’s headquarters in Montpellier, followed by sessions for officials in Malmö, Sweden. This joint effort combined technology with practical training to help teams handle situations on court.
Vogo and the EHF captured this work in a documentary, following the teams from their preparations through to decisions made during the competition. The ten-minute film explores how video supports referees’ judgement when it matters most.
